Why Would You Need A Tooth Extraction Surgery?

December 1, 2021

Some dental problems may need you to visit a dentist. For example, excessive tooth decay, crowding, or tooth infections, may require tooth extraction surgery. In addition, if you are getting braces, you probably will need teeth removal to create more space. Removing visible teeth is a simple extraction procedure. However, impacted or broken teeth below the gum surface require a more engaging procedure.

Possible Problems After Teeth Removal Surgery

After your surgery, you might observe the following:

  1. Bleeding At The Point Of Extraction

It is normal for you to have some bleeding after tooth extraction. During the first 36 hours, you might observe pink-tinted saliva. In case the bleeding does not stop after 46 hours, call our dentist for assistance.

  1. Dead Tooth Fragments

This is when you have small, sharp tooth fragments that remain during surgery. When healing, you might notice some sharp fragments poking through the surgery site. They might also induce pain. Contact our dentist to have them removed.

  1. Dry Socket

After the procedure, pain should subside gradually. If you have unbearable pain going up to the ear, you might be having a dry socket. This occurs when the blood clot becomes irritated and ousted before healing is complete. It might be caused by tobacco use, women taking oral contraceptives, or food getting into the socket. It is not an infection, but it requires you to see our dentist.

  1. Fasting Before Surgery May CauseLightheadedness

This is because fasting makes your blood sugar drop a little as the body needs to process some sugars to raise the level. During this time, try eating something soft and sugary. Also, it is important to elevate the headrest to reduce light-headedness.

  1. Numbness

If you are feeling numb, do not worry. It is normal, most patients report it, and it can last up to 10-12 hours after the procedure.

  1. Swelling

This should disappear completely in 10 days after the surgery. Applying an ice pack to the face near the point extraction will help reduce it. This should be done after fifteen minutes for thirty-six hours after the extraction. After that, use moist heat instead. This is achieved by applying a warm dumb cloth to the sides of your face.

  1. Difficulty When Opening Or Closing Your Mouth Or Swallowing

This is not an issue to worry about as your chewing muscles and jaw joints may become sore for 3-5 days. However, the soreness fades away with time.

Taking Care of Your Mouth After the Procedure

  • Our dentist will place a gauze pad on the site of extraction. You should keep applying pressure on it by biting it down. Dampen the gauze with water when it starts to dry out. Keep applying pressure at intervals of 45-60 minutes until bleeding lessens. Change the gauze if necessary.
  • You should lower your activities as much as possible and keep your head elevated.
  • Forty-eight hours after surgery, rinse your mouth with warm salt water every 1-2 hours. Do not use mouthwash with alcohol, as it will irritate the wound.
  • Brush your teeth to keep the mouth clean and brush around the surgical site avoiding sutures. Also, do not touch the wound area.
  • You can place ice packs on the facial areas near the extraction to control the swelling.
  • Be sure to complete the dose of the medication provided. Then, if there is itching or swelling, our dentist near you will be ready to address the issue.
  • Taking soft foods with high protein will do you good.
  • Drink plenty of fluids through a straw to keep the body hydrated for the next 5-7 days.
  • Regular smokers should hold back for the next 3 – 4 days to avoid getting dry sockets as well as an infection.
